THE DOHA DIAMOND LEAGUE 2024:
Mary Moraa showcased her strategic prowess once again in the women’s 800m event during the Doha Diamond League on Friday, May 10, 2024. As the pacemaker exited the track, the reigning world champion from Kenya took the lead, deliberately slowing down the pace, forcing her competitors to trail behind her.
Among those challengers was Jemma Reekie, the world indoor silver medallist, who attempted to overtake Moraa. However, Moraa, fresh from her victory in Nairobi last month, maintained her position at the front, ultimately accelerating in the final stretch to cross the finish line first in 1:57.91.
Noelle Yarigo of Benin, who secured bronze in Glasgow, claimed the third position once again, followed by Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu, with Uganda’s former world champion Halimah Nakaayi finishing fifth. Moraa’s strategic finesse, demonstrated by her victory over Olympic champion Athing Mu and Keely Hodgkinson in Budapest last year, positions her as a formidable contender, likely to be a frontrunner at the Paris 2024 event.
